For the F3, the combination of the meter in the body and the electronic shutter provides an aperture priority mode. The F2 has the meter in the pentaprism and the body is completely mechanical. The major differences are the meter and the shutter timing. Time proved the F3 just as reliable, and eventually the pros all jumped on board.
